Extending the Northern Line to Battersea
We plan to use funding from major developments in the Nine Elms regeneration zone to pay for an extension of the Northern Line. This will create brand new Tube stops at Wandsworth Road and Battersea Power Station.
The Tube link will underpin the regeneration of Nine Elms, helping to create 25,000 new jobs and 16,000 new homes.
Longer-term we want to extend the Tube link on to Clapham Junction.
Progress
The scheme has the support of Transport for London (TfL), The Mayor of London and the UK Government. TfL is now finalising the plans and expects to submit a planning application under the Transport and Works Act in 2013.
District Line upgrades
The Wimbledon Branch of the District Line suffers from severe overcrowding and frequent delays during peak times. The council is pressing for a series of infrastructure upgrades and timetable changes which would increase capacity, increase service frequency and reduce overcrowding.
Progress
In December 2011 TfL made key timetable changes which mean five extra trains now run during the morning peak from Wimbledon Station into central London - a 12 per cent boost to passenger capacity.
Evening service frequencies were also increased to six trains per hour until 11.30pm on the Wimbledon Branch.
A further upgrade of the District Line will see new trains introduced by 2016, increasing capacity by 24 per cent. More information is available on TfL's website.
Improving Northern Line services
The council is campaigning for major improvements to Northern Line services which are the busiest on the underground network. Residents and businesses in Balham and Tooting rely heavily on this route and investment is needed to improve reliability and ease overcrowding.
