Stages of school

Primary schools

Children are admitted to reception classes in our primary schools in the September of the school year in which they become five years old.

There are 54 primary schools in Wandsworth (plus one infant and one junior school), most of which have a nursery class. There are also three individual nursery schools.

If your child is about to begin school and you a searching for a primary school,  please contact them direct.  you can request a prospectus, book a visit or attend an open day. The schools can also provide you with an application form to request a place. 

Types of primary school

There are three different types of council-funded primary schools in the borough:

  • Community Schools - Schools or colleges where the Local Education Authority (LEA) is responsible for the admissions policy.
  • Foundation Schools - Schools or colleges where the school governors are responsible for the admissions policy.
  • Voluntary aided (Faith Schools) - Schools for which responsibility is split between the council and the Church Authorities. The voluntary aided primary schools in the borough are either Church of England,  Roman Catholic or Muslim. The governors of a voluntary aided school are responsible for admissions to the school.

Secondary schools

There are 10 state-funded secondary schools in Wandsworth. There are various types of schools and within these there are also different types of places available.

Types of secondary school

  • Community School - Schools or colleges where the Local Education Authority (LEA) is responsible for the admissions policy.
  • Foundation School - Schools or colleges where the governors are responsible for the admissions policy.
  • Voluntary Aided School - Denominational schools or colleges where the governors are responsible for the admissions policy.
  • Independent schools - An independent school is a school for which parents pay fees.
  • Academy - A state funded independent school where the governors are responsible college for the admissions policy.
