Open Council - background information
Can I rely on these data?
Data from service areas
All councils are required to submit a wide range of data to Government covering most key service areas. This helps the Government to track the expenditure of public money and to provide assurance to Parliament and the public that it is achieving value for money.
These data are often validated by government departments prior to being published as statistical releases. Validation processes vary hugely, but they aim to ensure that data conform to certain standards that help promote comparability from one local authority area to the next.
Each council is responsible for their own arrangements to ensure the actual quality of the data that they submit to government. Therefore, the level of audit and other checking of data is likely to vary significantly.
In light of this, these performance profiles can only provide an indication of performance and help identify areas that may warrant closer attention.
