Services and support for children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD)
As knowledge and awareness of ASD has increased, more children today are being diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder. Nationally, approximately 1 in every 100 children has an ASD.
In December 2011 there were 586 children identified with ASD in the borough of Wandsworth and this is expected to rise to about 646 by 2015.
It is likely that all teachers will have an autistic child in their class at some time. In 2004 we launched the 'Every School Autism Friendly' initiative to ensure that all Wandsworth schools have the knowledge and the skills they need to support children effectively and help them achieve.
This has involved a wide-ranging programme of training and development and the establishment of an ASD advisory service to support successful inclusion in mainstream schools.
