What is a Shared Accommodation rate?

  A person is treated as living in shared accommodation if they have exclusive use of only one room / area for living in and where the tenancy provides for shared use of one or more of:

Ø      A kitchen

Ø      A bathroom

Ø      A toilet,

Ø      Or a room suitable for living in

 

The shared accommodation rate  applies to single people, or couples with no children who live in shared accommodation. This is regardless of age.

 From January 2012. The amount of Housing Benefit payable to a single person under 35 is restricted to the shared accommodation rate no matter what size accommodation they are living in.
