Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can my deposit be paid?
Housing Benefit does not cover deposits.
Landlords may require tenants to pay a deposit of between one week's and two months' rent although you can, of course, try to negotiate with the landlord. You should obtain a receipt for any payments you take.
If you are in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance, Income Support or Incapacity Benefit, you may be entitled to a Crisis Loan or a Budgeting Loan. If you want to see whether you are eligible to apply for such a loan, please contact your local Jobcentre Plus.
The DirectGov website provides information and advice about renting, including information about the Tenancy Deposit Scheme.
