Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I have an overpayment?

Answer:

An overpayment is any amount of benefit which has been paid to you that you were not entitled to receive. An overpayment can occur for various reasons, such as:

  • You have given us the wrong information
  • You have not told us about a change in circumstances
  • You have delayed telling us about a change in circumstances

Examples of changes you need to report include:

  • Starting work
  • A change of job or a change in the hours you work
  • A change in the amount of income you get from any benefits that you receive
  • Moving house
  • You no longer receive child benefit for a child in your household
  • A partner moving in with you

If you are overpaid you will be sent a letter telling you about the overpayment with a brief explanation of why it occurred. If you are unsure about the notification letter you have received, see Your benefit entitlement letter explained - also you can Contact us.
