Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why isn’t a food waste collection provided?

Answer:

The council has carefully investigated different ways of dealing with food waste and feel that the best options are to help residents to reduce the amount of food waste they produce in the first place and to home compost the remaining waste.

Collecting food could be difficult due to a lack of local facilities that are able to process food waste and could be expensive for the taxpayer. Reducing food waste and home composting are good for the environment and can really help you to save money.

Did you know that the average household throws away a third of the food they buy wasting around £420 per year? This is the same as putting one out of three bags of shopping straight in the bin.

The council has been working as part of a national campaign to help residents to reduce the amount of food they waste. For more information, tips on reducing food waste and saving money and delicious recipes, please visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com

Unavoidable food waste such as vegetable peelings and eggshells can be composted at home, producing your own high quality compost. The council subsidises composters to provide them at a reduced cost for residents. For more information about getting a composter contact the call centre or visit:
