Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Q: Can I join the police and become a dog handler straight away?
Answer: You must first complete your probationary period of two years as a police constable and be confirmed in appointment. Officers who meet the relevant criteria may then apply for posts in specialised roles such as dog handler as they are advertised. If your application is successful, you will be appointed. Police dog handlers have to have an affinity with dogs and live in a property that has space outside for a kennel.
