Q: Why is a grave only sold for a set amount of time?
Answer:
The law says that graves cannot be sold for more than 100 years and authorities cannot go against that law. But, the law does allow grant of ownership to be extended - this means you can "top-up" the lease and the grave can stay in the family for as long as you wish - in Wandsworth the initial lease is for 40 years, and this can be 'topped-up' by extending the burial rights by periods of 5 years.
