We want to keep on improving the quality of life in the borough.

Wandsworth Local Strategic Partnership (WLSP) brings together a number of agencies such as the council, health service, police and other public and voluntary sector partners to work together to look at the future of Wandsworth.

The WLSP is developing a Sustainable Community Strategy for Wandsworth called "Wandsworth 2018". This is a ten-year plan that identifies what we need to do to make sure Wandsworth is a place where people are proud to live and work in.

The consultation on what you think we should be doing to improve life in the borough has now closed. We will report back here soon on the results of what you've said to us.

Wandsworth 10 years from now
We have some idea as to what Wandsworth will be like 10 years from now. No one can predict the future but there are some things we can be certain about:

  • Wandsworth is likely to see a growth in its population. Projections indicate that by 2016 there will be 133,381 households - up from 124,931 today. This will bring demands for more housing and further pressure on our local public transport system.
  • Climate change is already a global and local concern. Reducing our carbon footprint now is vital but we also need to plan for the possible impact of flooding or water shortages.
  • Overall Wandsworth is a healthy borough but it still has higher than average levels of smoking, obesity and heart disease. Binge drinking too is a problem. These health challenges need action now but they will also need long-term action. The health affects of an unhealthy lifestyle may not become obvious straight away.

The WLSP has been working since 2001 to improve the quality of life of people in the borough. The first community strategy for the borough was published in 2003 and has helped guide the way the council and its partners work together. You can download a copy of the original strategy in pdf format.

The WLSP already has in place some long term plans for the borough. For example,

  • Supporting the building of new private and public housing and making the best use of what we have already.
  • Working for a transport system that is safe and efficient and has proper respect for the environment. In the long term this means integrating, improving and expanding the local public transport system.
  • Making sure our parks and open spaces are protected and improved. Residents have told us these are some of the best things about the borough.
  • Supporting our five town centres - Balham, Clapham Junction, Putney, Tooting and Wandsworth – as the focus for local shopping and leisure.
  • Keeping the community spirit that exists in the borough and encouraging active citizenship by promoting volunteering opportunities.
  • Giving young children the best start in life through a comprehensive approach to early years health, development and fun.

The vision for Wandsworth

"By 2018 we want to make Wandsworth a place which is safer, healthier, more prosperous and sustainable, a good place to live and work now and a better place in the future."

Together with our partners, we have already done a lot of detailed background work on the draft priorities for the future. We have looked at what we have done so far, how we are performing and what challenges for the borough may lie ahead. Residents across the borough were consulted on a unique range of issues to find out how they would like to see their borough in the future. This information will help us ensure that Wandsworth remains one of the best places to live and work. If you would like to find out more about each of the priorities please click on the priority /priorities that are important to you below.

Publishing the Sustainable Community Strategy
In October 2008 the WLSP members will approve the final SCS which will be widely publicised and available here to download.
