The Business Rate, also known as non-domestic rates (NDR), is a tax on
properties that are not used for domestic purposes (for example, shops,
factories and offices). If your property is used for both domestic and
non-domestic purposes part of it will be assessed for Business Rates and the
other part for council tax, for example a public house.
We collect Business Rates on behalf of central government. The council is
required to pay the money due for Business Rates into a national pool, whether
or not it has all been collected. This money is then shared out to each local
authority depending on their population. Business Rates, together with council
tax, help the council to pay for its services.
Each year we produce leaflets to accompany the Business Rate bill that
provide explanatory notes on Business Rates, details of the council's budget and
the various payment facilities available. These leaflets may be downloaded from
below.
You can find out more at www.businesslink.gov.uk a
Government-funded site, designed to provide businesses with a single source of
clear and concise information on Business Rates.
Please note that Business Rates do not cover refuse
collection.
