Wandsworth Sanctuary Strategy

Wandsworth is proud to be an open and welcoming borough to all those who wish to live here. As a Council we have supported people fleeing violence and persecution in Afghanistan and Syria through the government’s resettlement programmes. Since March 2022, over 500 households in Wandsworth have shown enormous generosity in opening their homes to Ukrainians under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

We have committed to becoming a Borough of Sanctuary, developing a new Sanctuary Strategy which sets out a three-year plan for how we will welcome and support all sanctuary seekers.

How it was developed

The plan has been developed both in conjunction with local groups and stakeholders, and by engaging directly with refugees and those seeking asylum who have been resettled locally, drawing on their lived experience.

Our approach is underpinned by five overarching principles; we will be welcoming, universal, clear, collaborative and accessible.

Next steps

The strategy and action plan will be monitored by the Wandsworth Migration Forum.
