Meet the nonrecyclables!

A new website has been created to help raise residents' awareness of what, and crucially what not, to include in your clear recycling sack or orange-lidded recycling bank

A new nonrecyclables website has been created to help raise residents' awareness of what, and crucially what not, to include in your clear recycling sack or orange-lidded recycling bank.  This features recycling "gremlin" characters, each representing a material that people wrongly include in their mixed recycling.  In Wandsworth, the things people put in their recycling most often which should not be included are:

  • Textiles/old clothes
  • Plastic packaging films and carrier bags
  • Food waste
  • Electrical items and cables
  • Shredded paper

Find out what to do with these items

It's also important to exclude lids/caps, to rinse food residues off containers and keep your recycling dry (wet paper can't be recycled). So if in doubt, please leave it out!

Currently around 14% of what the Council collects in clear recycling sacks and orange-lidded banks should not have been put in them.  This is down from nearly 20% two years ago, so good progress to improve the quality of recycling has already been made.  But further improvements are needed as the Council has to pay twice when people get it wrong- Firstly to sort the material out and secondly to dispose of it.

With thanks for your recycling efforts!
