Housing - Private tenants - Advice and support

We provide housing advice and assistance to private sector tenants and landlords in the borough, assisting in the regulation of the sector and promoting best practice by landlords.

For tenants experiencing problems with their landlord, including a risk of future homeless, experienced officers are available to discuss the issues and provide impartial advice on what to do.

For those at risk of homelessness, the advice and assistance provided will depend on your requirements and status. The Housing Advice service also tries to prevent tenants being evicted from their accommodation without due process of law and as such would look to reinstate those who have been illegally evicted. One of the aims of the service is to enable tenants to reside without fear of harassment and the service can, on behalf of the Council, prosecute landlords in the criminal courts for various offences concerning illegal eviction and/or harassment.
