Young carersWho is young carer?If a child or young person (aged 5-18) provides and helps with the day-to-day care of a family member who has a physical disability, mental illness, serious illness, drug/alcohol dependency or HIV/Aids, he or she is a young carer.What is the Young Carers Project?The Wandsworth Young Carers Project works with children and young people aged 5-18 years who provide care (physical and/or emotional) for a family member who has a physical disability, mental illness, serious illness, drug/alcohol dependency or HIV/Aids.The project aims to ensure that the young carers are supported and that they have the opportunity to have a break from their caring role and meet others with similar circumstances. The current programme involves monthly club nights for the four age groups (5-6 years, 7-10 years, 11-13 years and 14-18 years). Additional social activities and educational and emotional support workshops are run during the school holidays. The project also offers individual family support and advocacy where possible and is currently running three residential trips each year. Membership of the project is possible through self-referral or inter-agency referral. Please contact the project for more information and referral forms. Who can use the Service?Children aged 5-18 who are caring for somebody who is ill, has a disability, is experiencing mental health difficulties or is affected by substance misuse.How to Access the ServiceYou can access the services by either phoning yourself or through a statutory or voluntary agency.
