Children and young people

If you are worried about someone seeing that you have read these pages then see our 'safe surfing' section which will help you hide your visit from anyone that might look.

Not many adults harm children, and even fewer do it on purpose. When it does happen it's more likely that families need help, not be made to move away from each other, so do not be scared that you will be taken away if you tell anyone you think something is happening to you. Also, if you are being abused you should never feel ashamed or embarrassed to tell anyone.

There are many people you can talk to; a teacher, doctor, or family member. If you want to talk anonymously then there are several phonelines you can call, like Childline. See our 'what to do if you are worried section' for more contacts.

Children and Young People's Plan 2008-2011 - CYPP Version

Working together with all the partner agencies in Wandsworth, a new Children and Young People's Plan for 2008-2011 has been produced. This builds on the first plan which covered the period 2006-2008.

The new Children and Young People's Plan sets out a shared set of priorities and a vision for developing services for children and young people across the borough. The plan is based around actions to support the 5 'Every Child Matters' outcomes which are designed to ensure that children and young people are:

  • Safe from harm (STAY SAFE)
  • Healthy and have healthy lifestyles (BE HEALTHY)
  • Doing well at school and enjoying their leisure time (ENJOY and ACHIEVE)
  • Contributing positively to society (MAKE a POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION)
  • Living in families with enough money to meet their needs, and have the skills to progress in their lives (ECONOMIC WELL-BEING)

Background information
The priorities in the plan have been shaped by the views of children and young people themselves as well as parents, carers and families from across the borough. The plan also reflects the important issues identified by the schools, health services, police and other partners. By looking carefully at data and listening to a wide range of views, a number of actions and priorities have been developed that we hope will have a positive impact on children and young people in Wandsworth.

A copy of the full plan, summary version and children and young peoples version are available below. We will be monitoring our performance against targets regularly to make sure we are on track, and we'll review and update the plan annually to make sure it stays relevant.

Youths - a handbook for young people

'Youths' is a handbook to help you make the right decision for yourself. It doesn't have all the answers and doesn't tell you what to do, but it's got straightforward advice to help you through many situations young people have to deal with every day.

This handbook will guide you through dealing with tough situations and tricky decisions, but remember some of it's new territory for the adults too! In each section and at the end of the handbook there is a list of local organisations that can offer advice and support to you.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the consultation, development and creation of this handbook. In particular we'd like to thank all the young people gave their views and comments and helped in creating 'the look' and design of the front page. Without all your input, the creation of this handbook would not have been possible. Many thanks!
