What's new?

Team Read
Encourage your children to enjoy reading during the summer holidays, and help them return to school raring to go!

Team Read, linked to this year's Olympics, is designed to encourage children to enjoy reading, get active and win medals.

Children pick up a Team Read membership card and poster from the library and collect bronze, silver and gold stickers as they read. There's a gold medal and a certificate for reading 6 books, and an exciting website at www.teamread.co.uk

Young people can take part in the Reading Challenge Plus, and children under four can take part in the special Team Read Baby Book Crawl.

The Challenge runs from July 19 to September 6.

National Year of Reading
The National Year of Reading (NYR) is a year-long celebration of reading, in all its forms. It aims to increase awareness of the many values of reading - anything, anytime, anyplace - for children, families and adult learners alike.

To celebrate the NYR, Wandsworth Libraries has a series of events happening throughout the year - watch this space and the screen in your library!

We'd like to know - Which one book would you take to your desert island? And why have you chosen this book?

The results of our poll will be published in August.

To tell us which one book you would take with you, you can either email us at libraries@wandsworth.gov.uk; or fill in a bookmark at your local library.

West Hill Library
West Hill Library closed permanently on 29 December 2007. It will be replaced by a new Wandsworth Town Library, which will open in summer 2009 in the Court House building at 11 Garratt Lane, SW18, opposite Southside shopping centre.

Local alternatives are Alvering Library, Putney Library and Southfields Library or you can use any of the other eight libraries in the borough.

Library items can be returned to any Wandsworth Library and renewed using the 24 hour renewal line on 0115 929 3388 or online.

Battery recycling at libraries
Did you know...

• Around 600 million UK household batteries (22,000 tonnes) - the equivalent weight of 110 Jumbo Jets - are sent to landfill unnecessarily every year.
• The average household uses 21 batteries a year, all of which could be recycled.
• 89% of batteries are for general use and can be found in every room in the house.
• You can now recycle your used household batteries at  libraries.  Simply deposit them for collection in the special container at the reception desk.
• These household batteries can be accepted for recycling: non-rechargable types D, C, AA, AAA, 9V and button cell.
