What are community centres?
Community centres are public facilities run by us. There are two in the borough: Open Door Community Centre and Wilditch Community Centre. Both centres have a Computer and Learning suite.

You can use them to:

  • hire space to have parties or meetings
  • take part in different activities for all ages
  • organise your own activity
  • learn to use a computer and take a course
  • get advice and information
  • meet friends
  • find out what is happening in your area

Both centres have halls that you can hire for large events such as wedding receptions, birthday parties, christenings and socials.

The Open Door Centre has a bar you can stock yourself and there are also a number of smaller rooms you can hire for events such as activities, exercise classes, committee meetings, counselling sessions, training sessions and rehearsals.

The halls in both the centres are different sizes and between 40 and 200 people can use them.

Find out what different rooms are available at the Open Door centre and the Wilditch centre.

How do I set up an activity?
Anybody can set up an activity at any of the community centres. Here are a few questions for you to think about.

  • Is there a need for this activity?
  • Can you commit yourself regularly?
  • What do you need to know before you start?
  • What equipment or help will you need?
  • What happens if you cannot turn up for a session?
  • How much are you going to charge? (remember that your costs will include paying rent to the community centre)
  • How will you tell people about the activity?

Don't forget that the centre staff are able to give you advice and encouragement.
