 STOP means STOP
Everyday throughout the UK some car drivers, motorcycle riders and even cyclists:
- Fail to STOP when School Crossing Patrollers display their signs in the road.
- Move off before the School Crossing Patroller has returned to the pavement. This has resulted in injury and death. Could you live with that on your conscience?
Remember, failure to obey a School Crossing Patrol STOP sign could result in a maximum fine of £1,000 plus a minimum 3 penalty points on your driving licence or even worse the death of a pedestrian.
The School Crossing Patrol Service (SCP Service)
About the service
The job of a School Crossing Patroller is to help children to cross roads on their way to and from school.
We approve and review sites, recruiting, training and supervising patrollers and the day to day running of the service.
During the financial year 2007/08 the budget allocated to run the service was £193,000. For 2008/09 the budget is £192,730 - this covers recruitment, training, uniforms, pay, administration and insurance.
School Crossing Patrollers are always being requested by schools and parents but, as a priority we try to make sure that places where children have most problems crossing in safety, have a patroller.
School Crossing Patrollers are not required by law, but we chose to continue to provide the service when it was transferred from the Metropolitan Police in 2001. Patrols are provided where children have difficulty crossing, usually due to heavy traffic, but Patrollers are never asked to work in dangerous situations, so children may need to walk slightly further to a safer place where the Patroller can work in safety. Each site must be approved and registered, there is no insurance cover for any other sites nor for any person fully approved and trained by the council.
Sometimes a patroller is unwell or for some other reason is unable to attend their patrol site, and we do our best to find cover however this is not usually possible.
