Description
Covered shopping centre with housing estate above, completed in the early 1970's; it covers an area of over 6 ha. There is opportunity for new investment in the centre to introduce new town centre attractions as well as new shopping facilities. Outline planning permissions were granted in 1993 and 1994 for an hotel adjoining the centre on land in Mapleton Road. In 1996 (application no. 95/C/0368) and in 1998 (application no. C/98/0074) further permissions were granted for additional leisure and retail facilities including a multi-screen cinema complex, bowling alley, restaurants, cafes and public houses, as well as alterations to the entrances.

In 1999, a planning application (no. C/99/0424) was approved for a health and fitness club on the first floor. Improvements to the entrances to the flats and their relationship to the commercial servicing areas are being supported with a successful Single Regeneration Challenge Fund bid, as well as a refurbishment programme for the flats and the exterior of the blocks.
