Trees are vitally important in towns to improve our quality of life. They provide oxygen and shade, screen unsightly buildings as well as filtering noise and dirt.
We have about 150,000 trees in Wandsworth. We own and manage about half of these and the rest are in private gardens, schools and industrial sites.
To help protect trees for future generations, we have produced a Tree Strategy.
This strategy:
- Covers the status and condition of trees in Wandsworth;
- Sets out guidance on managing trees;
- Encourages local action.
We have planning powers to protect certain trees under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. You can find out more about protected trees and tree preservation orders on the Planning Service pages of this site.
For information and advice on trees, contact the Tree Section of the Aboricultural Service on 020 8871 6372 or email trees@wandsworth.gov.uk
How can I help look after trees?
1. Join the tree warden scheme.
Tree wardens are volunteers who have an interest in local trees and improving the environment. They find out more about local trees, carry out practical projects and give advice to the Council and the community. A training programme is run for all prospective Wardens covering tree surveys, woodland management and tree planting. This scheme is run in conjunction with the Tree Council. If you're interested in becoming involved, send us your details using the form here.
2. Report problems, such as vandalism or damage to trees.
3. Join or organise events to celebrate trees and nominate "Great Trees" that are important to you and the community.
4. Plant trees in your garden, business or school grounds.
5. Get some advice. The Tree Section can offer advice on planting and have a selection of free leaflets that we can send you. Select the leaflet you're interested in and fill out your details using the form here. |
