Visitor Parking in Controlled Parking Zones
Wandsworth is well served by public transport links for travel within the borough and beyond. There are six underground stations and eight railway stations in Wandsworth, as well as numerous bus routes. Information on public transport services in Wandsworth can be found on our Travel and Transport pages. However, we are aware that some journeys must be made by car, and this page is designed to give general advice about on-street parking for visitors in controlled parking zones (CPZs) in Wandsworth.

In most CPZs within Wandsworth that operate all day (e.g. from 9.30am to 4.30pm), on-street pay and display parking is provided in shared use bays. Shared use bays are available to pay and display visitors and permit holders. The maximum stay allowed for pay and display generally varies between two and four hours, depending on where the bays are, but in some areas there are longer maximum stay bays available. Generally, shared use parking bays near town centres allow a shorter maximum stay than those further out. Signs displayed next to the bays (like the one on the left) clearly indicate the maximum parking time allowed. The machines accept 5p,10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2 coins, with a minimum charge of 10p, which will purchase a very short period of time. The machines do not give change.

There is a pay-by-phone system available to pay and display visitors throughout the borough. Find out more information about the scheme.

In roads close to shops and businesses, some pay and display only 'shopper' parking bays may be provided. These bays allow a short maximum stay of 30 minutes or an hour, to ensure a regular turnover of vehicles in busy areas with a high demand for parking. An example of a pay and display only 'shopper' bay sign is shown on the right.

Visitors should always check the bay signs carefully before leaving their vehicles as some pay and display facilities are only available at certain times (e.g. between 10am and 4pm) and outside these hours, other restrictions may be in force.

Resident Visitor Parking permitsResident Visitor Permits
Residents can purchase permits for their visitors to use, which allow them to park in resident permit holder only bays, permit holder only bays, and shared use (pay and display and permit holder) bays in a CPZ during the controlled hours. Daily and weekly visitor permits are available.

In CPZs that operate for one hour a day (e.g. between 10.30am and 11.30am) pay and display parking is not provided, and all visitors must display a visitor permit to be able to park. A visitor permit must be validated before it is displayed in a vehicle. This is done by scratching off the date/s and filling in the vehicle registration number. View more information about visitor permits.

Grace periods
The regulations require that a motorist displays a pay and display ticket or permit immediately upon parking, although in practice, a five-minute period is allowed to enable motorists time to obtain a ticket or visitor permit, return and display it. Motorists are also allowed five minutes from the expiry time on a pay and display ticket before a Penalty Charge Notice is issued.

Motorcycles can park in any permit holder or shared use (permit holder and pay and display) bay without displaying a permit or pay and display ticket. Motorcyclists are advised to park considerately with their back wheels to the kerb.
There are also a number of solo motorcycle bays throughout the borough.
