Road transport plays an important role in the economic and social life of the borough. However, it also causes problems such as noise, air pollution and congestion. Sustainable transport is a key element of our transport policy.

To encourage this, we:

  • Provide on street facilities, such as cycle parking and bus and cycle lanes as well as creating safer environments for pedestrians. You can find out more about sustainable transport policy and projects from our transportation pages.
  • Produce an annual Road Safety Plan.
  • Run promotional events and activities on the theme of environmentally friendly travel as part of the London-wide Good Going campaign. Find out more at www.goodgoing.co.uk
  • Encourage children to walk, cycle and use public transport to school - the School Travel Strategy with the Walk to School Week held twice a year.
  • Have adopted a staff travel plan to reduce the environmental effects of its own staff driving to work and on work-related business runs 10% of its light fuels and vans on alternative fuels.
  • Have joined forces with Streetcar, the UK's leading car club operator, to expand the network of cars available for public use across the borough
  • Promote the use of cleaner fuels and the removal of smoky vehicles from our roads.
  • Have launched a pilot scheme to provide charging points for electric vehicles.

We also work with the transport providers and Transport for London (TfL) to co-ordinate more efficient London-wide public transport. You can find out more about these organisations on their websites.

Transport for London (TfL) is an executive body of the Greater London Authority (GLA) reporting to the Mayor of London. It is responsible for delivering the Mayor's integrated transport strategy, with London boroughs and the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA).
