Our services

Aims
The Licensing Service at Wandsworth processes a wide variety of licence and registration applications. The service aims to:

  • ensure that, as far as possible, residents are protected from adverse environmental impact from entertainment venues within the Borough whilst also respecting the business perspective;
  • ensure that residents and visitors using licensed premises can do so safely;
  • protect the public from unscrupulous traders;
  • ensure the protection of animal welfare.

Objectives
This will be achieved through the following key objectives:

a) Implement the Gambling Act 2005, setting up appropriate procedures and achieving all statutory time limits. 

b) Monitor the effect of the implementation of the Licensing Act 2003, particularly in respect of the impact on residents of the Borough having regard to the four licensing objectives.  

c) Investigate all complaints relating to licensing matters; all complaints to be responded to within 2 working days of receipt (or on the same day where the matter poses an imminent threat to a person's health and safety).

d) Process licence applications in accordance with policy and procedure, undertaking consultation in accordance with legislation, policy and procedure with e.g. local residents, Metropolitan Police, London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, Care Standards Authority, Veterinary Officers.
 
e) Improve the knowledge of the business community and employees by providing advice, information and education. 

f) Carry out targeted enforcement visits.

g) Ensure that enforcement action taken is uniform and proportionate and that enforcement officers are trained and competent.

What we currently licence

Licensing Act 2003
Since November 2005 we have taken over responsibility for processing personal licences, premises licences, club premises certificates and temporary event notices covering the sale and supply of alcohol, provision of regulated entertainment and provision of late night refreshment. Find out more.

Gambling Act 2005
When the Gambling Act 2005 comes fully into force in September 2007, Wandsworth Council will be the licensing authority for the granting of premises licences for betting shops, bingo halls, amusement arcades and family entertainment centres and for the granting of gaming machine and prize gaming permits. Special Treatment establishments
Premises providing special treatments such as sauna, massage, sunbeds, manicure, pedicure, electrolysis etc. require a licence from the local authority. Besides the premises for special treatments having to be licensed, the therapists providing the treatment must be registered with the Council.
