Planning for tomorrow - today

We aim to make Wandsworth safer, healthier, more prosperous and sustainable – a good place to live and work now and a better place in the future.

Our Wandsworth 2018 looks ahead to the kind of place we all want our borough to be in the future.

2018 bannerIt is the 'blueprint' of how the council and its partners, including the police and the health services, will work together to improve the lives of people in the borough over the next ten years.

All boroughs must have a long-term plan like Our Wandsworth 2018. Also known as a Sustainable Community Strategy (SCS), it is a way of making sure local people are safe and healthy and have an improved quality of life, that communities are developing in a sustainable way and that local people's concerns are being addressed.

Before finalising Our Wandsworth, we listened to the concerns local people have now and for the future. We've also had feedback about the good things in Wandsworth, like the parks and open spaces, which residents would like protected.

Wandsworth 10 years from now
We have some idea as to what Wandsworth will be like 10 years from now. No one can predict the future but there are some things we can be certain about:

  • 2018 bannerWandsworth is likely to see a growth in its population. Projections indicate that by 2016 there will be 133,381 households - up from 124,931 today. This will bring demands for more housing and further pressure on our local public transport system.
  • Climate change is already a global and local concern. Reducing our carbon footprint now is vital but we also need to plan for the possible impact of flooding or water shortages.
  • Overall Wandsworth is a healthy borough but it still has higher than average levels of smoking, obesity and heart disease. Binge drinking too is a problem. These health challenges need action now but they will also need long-term action. The health affects of an unhealthy lifestyle may not become obvious straight away.

How the vision will be delivered

A group called the Local Strategic Partnership drew up Our Wandsworth and will monitor its implementation. This group, which is led by Wandsworth Council, contains 25 members drawn from the public, private, voluntary and community sector, including the health service, the police and residents' groups. All these different groups are already working together to bring about positive change.

At the same time Wandsworth Council will continue to put good quality, value-for-money services at the heart of everything it does.

The WLSP has been working since 2001 to improve the quality of life of people in the borough. The first community strategy for the borough was published in 2003 and has helped guide the way the council and its partners work together. You can download a copy of the original strategy in pdf format.

The WLSP already has in place some long term plans for the borough. For example,

  • Supporting the building of new private and public housing and making the best use of what we have already.
  • Working for a transport system that is safe and efficient and has proper respect for the environment. In the long term this means integrating, improving and expanding the local public transport system.
  • Making sure our parks and open spaces are protected and improved. Residents have told us these are some of the best things about the borough.
  • Supporting our five town centres - Balham, Clapham Junction, Putney, Tooting and Wandsworth – as the focus for local shopping and leisure.
  • Keeping the community spirit that exists in the borough and encouraging active citizenship by promoting volunteering opportunities.
  • Giving young children the best start in life through a comprehensive approach to early years health, development and fun.

Our Wandsworth 2018 describes the updated long-term vision for the borough. This vision will be achieved by setting shorter-term goals set out in a document called the Local area Agreement. There is also a range of action plans addressing the needs of specific groups such as young people and older residents, or issues like tackling crime.

Our Wandsworth will be regularly monitored and updated to make sure it continues to meet the needs of local people.

The council and its partners have also made a commitment to think about five important issues in all the work they do. These are promoting equality, sustainability, the way we work with local people, older people's issues and working with the voluntary and community sector.

Our Wandsworth 2018 will focus on seven priorities:
