Introduction This section is intended to allow pensioners and employees of the council access to information and reports about the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and the Council's pension fund.
Teachers are members of a separate pension scheme that is run by the Department for Education and Skills. Details about this pension scheme can be found at www.teacherspensions.co.uk.
The LGPS is set up by law and benefit levels are defined by legislation passed by Parliament. Benefits are based on pensionable pay and length of membership of the scheme. They are not dependent on the investment performance of the Pension Fund. Instead, the benefit levels are set out in the Pension Scheme Regulations, made under the 1972 Superannuation Act.
The LGPS provides a broad range of benefits:
- an annual pension based on final pay and period of membership
- the option to take a tax free lump sum
- life assurance cover of at least three times yearly pay
- partners's and children's pensions for deceased members.
- enhanced pensions paid early if members have to stop work permanently because of ill health.
- a pension which will be increased each year in line with inflation after leaving employment.
- a pension that maybe paid from age 55.
Details of the LGPS are shown in the brief guide to the LGPS which is also available by telephoning 020 8871 8036. You can view a timeline of recent changes to the LGPS - Updated.
All the documents available on this page are held in Adobe's pdf format.
