The Internal Audit Service provides the statutory internal audit of the Council's accounting records and of its system of internal control. We have rights of access to officers and Council Members, to documents, information and explanations that are necessary to carry out our work.

What's new?

• A revision to the Internal Audit departmentally focussed structure in the light of the Council's departmental re-organisation with the establishment of a Children's Services Department.
• The Fraud Act 2006 that introduces three new crimes of 'fraud'
• New Code of Conduct for Staff and new Whistleblowing Policy and Procedure.
• New CDM Regulations and Construction Industry Scheme.
• Rolling out the assessment of Financial Management Standard in Schools to primary and special schools
• New CIPFA/SOLACE advice on Corporate Governance Arrangements.
• Internal Audit successfully retained its Charter Mark. Thanks to all of you both within and outside the Council for your continued support and co-operation.
• Revised proper audit practice via CIPFA's Code of Practice for Internal Audit in Local Government in the United Kingdom 2006.

Further high-level Internal Audit work continues on corporate governance and service specific risk management within the Council departments.

• Internal Audit's corporate role on surveillance is expanding and there are new regulations to cover this (RIPA).
• The five-year contract for the provision of cyclical audits started on 1st April 2004 via Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Charter Mark
Wandsworth was the first local authority Internal Audit Service to gain the Government's Charter Mark quality accreditation. The Finance Department, as a whole, is also accredited as an Investor in People.

Internal Audit and the Council's financial arrangements retained maximum scores within the Audit Commission's 2003 CPA (Comprehensive Performance Assessment) "excellent" rating for the Council. Find out more about our CPA rating.
