Our performance and standards
We must make sure that everyone who lives in Wandsworth has a chance to vote in local, national, European elections and Referenda if they are entitled to.

This page shows the canvass results for the last two years, the 2006/07 annual report, and the cost of running the Service.

2006 canvass results
We aim to keep the details held on the register as complete and accurate as possible, and in 2006 the Service looked at how it could change the way we carry out the annual canvass in Wandsworth in order to increase the number of registrations.

The registration form and information leaflet that accompanies it, were reviewed and redesigned, and internet re-registration was introduced in addition to telephone re-registration. As a result the number of registrations made were 88.8%, which was 1.5% higher than in 2005.

Comparison of results of the 2006 canvass with other London Boroughs shows our registration rate was 4.5% higher than the Inner London average and the fourth highest of the 12 Inner London Boroughs.

In addition the electorate on the register published on 1 December 2006 is 219,160, which is 2,749 higher than in 2005.

The number of telephone re-registrations in 2005 was 15,141, a reduction of 1,658 from 2004. This year the total number of telephone re-registrations is 9,617 and internet re-registrations 8,267, resulting in a combined total of 17,884.

2007 canvass results
This year our Service once again looked at how we could change the way we carry out the annual canvass in Wandsworth, in order to increase the number of eligible people registered to vote, and as a result produce a more accurate register.

Particular attention was paid to those properties, identified in a survey carried out in 2006, where it is not possible to gain access. It was decided to canvass these by post only, in order to achieve better registration levels. In addition more publicity was carried out to promote internet re-registration and telephone re-registration.

Due to a number of new property developments being completed in the Borough in the last year, 1,994 additional households were canvassed this year. As a result there has been an increase of 2,619 electors since 2006 and the total number of electors as published on 1 December 2007 was 221,779.

As a result of all these factors the percentage of households who registered was 90.1%, which is 1.3% higher than in 2006. A request for the results of all London boroughs is currently underway and the comparisons will appear here when they have all responded and the details have been compiled.

Comparison of results of the 2007 canvass with other London boroughs show our registration rate was 3% higher than the Inner London average and the fifth highest of the 12 Inner London boroughs.

In 2006, the number of telephone re-registrations was 9,617 and internet re-registrations 8,267, resulting in a combined total of 17,884. This year the number of telephone re-registrations was 9,540 and internet re-registrations 9,665, resulting in a combined total of 19,205, which is a higher combined total of 1,321 than in 2006.

We try to answer all written enquiries within five working days. In 2006/07 we replied to 100% of your letters within this target time.

We aim to answer all phone calls within five rings. In 2006/07 we achieved this target in 93% of cases.

In 2006/07 we dealt with 5,358 customers at our reception, and everyone was seen within five minutes of arriving.

The cost of running the Electoral Registration service
In 2006/07 the cost of running the Electoral Registration Service was £735,000, which was £3.07 per elector. There are no comparative figures available from the other 11 Inner London boroughs.

The cost of carrying out the canvass in 2006 was £298,805, which was £1.36 per elector. This was lower than comparative costs per elector, and the Council was 4th most cost effective.
