Paying your bill
You will receive your Business Rates bill towards the end of March each year, or, if you are a new ratepayer, as soon as we are made aware that you are liable for Business Rates.

The Business Rates year runs from 1 April to 31 March and allows for payment by 10 monthly instalments from April to January, or if you receive your bill during the year, as many months as are still available.
The dates and amounts of the instalment payments due are shown on the bill and the payment counterfoils enclosed. You can, if you wish, pay the bill in full at the beginning of the year or half-yearly.

Please ensure that you pay your Business Rates on time and notify us immediately if some other person becomes liable to pay the bill.

Failure to pay on time will involve a summons being issued and the possibility of a bailiff visiting the property. This will incur extra charges being due and payable.

Direct Debit

Direct Debit
Wandsworth Council is always striving to keep costs low. Transactional costs for Direct Debit are cheaper, for example it costs Councils between 50p and 65p to deal with a cash transaction, and between 1.5p and 5p for a Direct Debit transaction so if you pay by Direct Debit you will help us to maintain these lower costs. Every year, more and more customers are signing up to pay their Business Rates by Direct Debit.

  • In 2004 there were 3,400
  • In 2005 there were 3,500
  • In 2006 there were 3,700

Your chance to pay the easy way ...
If you have not yet arranged to pay your Business Rates the easy way, don't worry! There is still time to join the thousands of customers who are already enjoying the benefits of Direct Debit.

The benefits of paying by Direct Debit are:

  • Payment will be automatically paid from your bank account to your Business Rates account keeping your payments up to date.
  • You do not have to queue or remember to make payment each month
  • Cheques can't get lost or stolen in the post
  • Never have the embarrassment of receiving a reminder, final notice or summons.
  • The Council and the banking system guarantees refunds in the event of error.
  • The Direct Debit instruction will continue year on year until you decide to cancel the arrangement, so there will be no need to complete forms each year or if your annual amount payable changes

If you have already made arrangements to pay by Standing Order, it is not too late to change to the easier option. If you are presently paying this way, you must cancel your Standing Order with your Bank or Building Society before changing to Direct Debit.

Payment date for Direct Debits is the 25th of each month.

If you want to join the thousands that already pay the easy way, simply download and complete the Direct Debit Mandate and return it to us.

Please do not send it to your Bank or Building Society because we have to process the form first.

The Direct Debit Guarantee
This Guarantee should be printed and retained by the payer.

This Guarantee is offered by all Banks and Building Societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme. The efficiency and the security of the Scheme is monitored and protected by your own Bank or Building Society.

If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change, Wandsworth Council will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.

If an error is made by Wandsworth Council or your Bank or Building Society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.

You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your Bank or Building Society. Please also send a copy of your letter to us.
