Civil Registration commenced in England and Wales in 1837. For events before this you should pursue your research elsewhere. To help we have provided some internet site suggestions below:
The Registers held at Wandsworth Register Office are for births, deaths and marriages only.
The information in the registers is available only in the form of a certified copy of the entry. Certificates carry a statutory fee - currently £7 each.
To apply for a certificate online, please visit our certificate ordering pages. In addition to your personal details, the date and location of the event should also be provided to enable us find the certificate that you want.
The registers held at this office cover the area now within the London Borough of Wandsworth including Putney, Roehampton, Wandsworth, Southfields, Earlsfield, Battersea, Tooting and parts of Balham, Streatham, and Clapham. Please note that most of Clapham is in the Borough of Lambeth.

A birth, marriage or death will be registered in the district where it actually occurred which will not necessarily be same as the persons residence at the time.
Searches through the indexes held here may be made in person. The fee is currently £18. Please make an appointment if you wish to make a search and note that we are not able to search on your behalf and the indexes are for Wandsworth District only. Information is provided only in the form of certificates from the entry for which the usual fee is payable.
If you know the date of the event but not where it occurred, a certificate may be obtained by personal application:
- Online, at www.ips.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates, this is the cheapest and quickest method of applying from GRO.
- By post from GRO, PO Box 2, Southport. Merseyside, PR8 2JD, please telephone the Contact Centre on 0845 603 7788 to request an application form,
- If you have a credit or debit card you can order a certificate over the telephone via the GRO Contact Centre on 0845 603 7788,
- From the local register office in the district where the event was registered.
Copies of this Index are held at many Family History Centres, County Record Offices and Reference Libraries around the world.
