Moving in
Enjoying the communal areas.

If you choose to move into sheltered accommodation, you will be given a booklet before you sign your tenancy agreement. The booklet will explain your rights and responsibilities as a sheltered housing resident. Unless you had a secure or assured tenancy at your previous address your new tenancy will be an 'introductory tenancy'. After 12 months it will normally then become a 'secure' tenancy.

  Fire safety

All sheltered housing schemes in the borough meet the strict requirements of the fire brigade, such as installing fire retardant doors and smoke alarms.
Where appropriate, there is a fire alarm system and equipment provided for emergency fire fighting.
The council's safety officer regularly inspects all schemes to ensure that there are no safety hazards within the accommodation and that fire safety equipment and alarms are working properly.

  Insurance

The council insures the building, fixtures and fittings. But residents are strongly urged to take out a contents insurance policy to cover furniture, carpets and personal possessions against loss, theft, fire, flood and other damage.
The Sheltered Housing Officer will be able to advise you of where you can get information about insurance policies designed for elderly householders.
