Help with adaptations

If you live in Wandsworth and are having problems coping in your home, help is available. If you would like advice and information on equipment (chair raisers, toilet seats etc.) and minor adaptations (grab rails, stair lifts etc.) please contact Wandsworth Community Equipment Service. If you would like advice and information on other types of adaptations (including ramps, stairlifts, level access showers, widening of doorways and remodelling of kitchens and bathrooms) contact the council's Occupational Therapy Service directly.

If you require adaptations to your home and you are a council tenant, the Occupational Therapy Service will liaise with the council's Disability Adaptations Team to arrange the works which will be carried out at no cost to you. If you are a housing association tenant or a private tenant, the Occupational Therapy Service will contact your landlord to obtain permission to adapt the property. Applications for a Disabled Facilities Grant can be made through the council's Home Improvement Agency.

If your landlord gives permission for the property to be adapted but is unable or unwilling to pay for the adaptations required, you can make an application for a Disabled Facilities Grant. You can also apply for the grant if you own your own home.

Council tenants can also apply for this grant if they wish but this is not usually necessary as the housing department will fund any adaptation works required. If you are eligible for the grant, you may wish to make your own arrangements for the work to be carried out. Alternatively, you may seek assistance from the council's Home Improvement Agency.
