Finding a home
Mutual exchanges and moving out of Wandsworth Wandsworth and London in general are very popular places to live, although sometimes it is easier or more convenient to find somewhere to live in other parts of the country. This section contains information about a number of schemes through which we and/or other councils may be able to help you move.
If you are a council or housing association tenant, you may be able to exchange your home with another council or housing association tenant anywhere in the UK, provided both you and the tenant you wish to swap with obtain written permission from both of your landlords before you move, which can only be refused on certain grounds. This is called a mutual exchange. If you swap your property for an overcrowded Wandsworth council tenant 's smaller property, you may qualify for payment under the Room to Move scheme. You will receive full payment where the exchange is a 'perfect fit' i.e. it results in both you and the tenant you exchange with occupying properties which you would be entitled to under the council's Allocation scheme. However, the mutual exchange scheme allows you to move to a property where you still have one spare room. If you do this, you will be entitled to the same payment you would have achieved should the exchange have been a 'perfect fit'. For further information including advice on finding someone to exchange with, please visit Directgov's website. If you are a secure council tenant and you have found a suitable exchange partner please contact the Lettings Section on 020 8871 6809/6811/8266 for further information. Housing association tenants wanting to obtain further information should contact their landlord.
If you are a council or housing association tenant, or you are registered on the Homeless Queue, and you are interested in moving out of London or into privately rented accommodation that is not in Wandsworth, you may be eligible for assistance under the Out of London Scheme (also known as the LAWN scheme). For further information, please see Directgov's website, contact the Homelessness Prevention Service (Housing Aid Centre) or download the 'Out of London' leaflet (pdf).
If you are a council or housing association tenant living in London who is aged 60 or over and capable of independent living, and you are interested in moving to the coast or countryside, you may be eligible for assistance via the Seaside and Country Homes Scheme.

Following changes in the law governing housing in February 2003, you are now able to register with any housing authority outside of Wandsworth. However, assistance via this method is dependant on the priority awarded to your application and the availability of resources within the area.
