Empty properties

At any one time, there are around 2,500 vacant properties in the borough. The vast majority are quickly re-occupied but some remain vacant for some time. Within our own stock, vacant properties are usually re-occupied within a few weeks unless there are special reasons to not do so.

The Environmental Services and Community Safety Division has an active policy of pursuing owners of empty homes and using a mixture of advice, financial assistance and enforcement action in order to ensure that they are brought back into use. If you know of an empty private home in your area please let us know by calling 020 8871 6171. If you own an empty home and would like advice or wish to investigate possible grant aid for returning it to use, please call the same number.

You can use our online form to report an empty home. We will investigate what's happening and try to bring it back into use. Alternatively, call the London Empty Homes Hotline on 0870 901 6303. Please tell us as much as you know. The information you give us will help identify what action is needed.
