The Tenancy Support Service

The Tenancy Support Service provides intensive support to Wandsworth Council Tenants identified as vulnerable and having problems maintaining their tenancy. It operates during normal office hours.

Assistance and advice can be offered on:

  • Rent arrears,
  • Housing benefit, Council tax benefit and welfare benefits,
  • Domestic budgeting, debt counselling and dealing with creditors,
  • Reporting and ordering repairs to the home,
  • Neighbour disputes and antisocial behaviour, and/or
  • Liaison with other agencies to ensure that the tenant is receiving appropriate specialist support and care.

Eligibility criteria

  • The applicant must be a tenant of Wandsworth Borough Council;
  • There should be clear indications of failure to maintain the tenancy, e.g. unable to make normal domestic arrangements such as paying rent and utility bills, claiming benefits, or shopping;
  • Failing to clean and repair their home and / or to report repairs;
    engaging in anti-social behaviour;
  • Showing a reluctance to relate to neighbours or with the wider community.

Qualifying tenants will often have an underlying vulnerability including:

  • A mental health problem;
  • A physical disability;
  • Substance or alcohol abuse;
  • Old age;
  • Leaving care, supported accommodation or prison;
  • People under the age of 18.

Access to the scheme will usually be by referral from council officers or agencies currently supporting the tenant, although tenants can also make a self-referral. For further information, please contact Warden Services on 020 8871 8198.
