Wandsworth Council's anti graffiti message is being heard according to young people who filled in a questionnaire at a recent event. The graffiti removal team was on hand to help raise awareness of graffiti removal services, educate young people and highlight the environmental damage and cost of graffiti vandalism in southwest London. The young people who filled out the questionnaire were visiting the Battersea Summer Scheme at Battersea Park in August. 56% of those who completed the questionnaire were aware of how much the council removed last year. 68% knew how much it cost to remove and a staggering 72%, where the money comes from.! Awareness of the graffiti removal service and its aims fell slightly to 55% as did peoples attitudes toward reporting graffiti dropping to 38%. One of the concerns was safety and fear of revenge however some said they didn't see it as their problem if it wasn't on their property. Over 4 days, the Battersea Summer Scheme was attended by over 2000 people. These included councillors, parents, children, representatives from the local community and sporting icon Linford Christie. The graffiti removal service was present on Thursday 7th August when around 550 people attended this day, over 200 of which visited our stand, completed a questionnaire and took away a free goody bag. Wandsworth's graffiti removal service is free to all residents and businesses in the borough. Offensive graffiti, such as racist or abusive, is removed within 24 hours and other forms are removed within three working days. To report graffiti or to find out more about the service call (020) 8871-7049, email graffiti@wandsworth.gov.uk or visit www.wandsworth.gov.uk/graffiti |
