Introduction
We aim to reduce graffiti in the borough by educating young people about the affects of graffiti vandalism and highlighting its anti-social and destructive nature. Work is undertaken with schools at both primary and secondary school level. We also take part in The Junior Citizen Scheme, provide lesson plans, commission interactive theatre shows and hold various graffiti awareness events borough-wide.

The work we do with schools is based around discussion, role-play and interaction, which brings issues surrounding graffiti, such as damage and cost, to the forefront with young people.  The council takes a preventative approach working closely with schools and the police to deter young people from committing graffiti vandalism in the first place. If you require any support materials or merchandise for your school or organisation such as pencils, pads and bags etc, please contact Claire Clancy on 020 8871 6827.

SWAAG (South West Action Against Graffiti)
Wandsworth Council is a founder member of SWAAG, which is a group of southwest London councils who, along with the Police and other interested groups, are determined to fight graffiti on all fronts. Other boroughs include Croydon, Hammersmith and Fulham, Hounslow, Kensington and Chelsea, Kingston, Lambeth, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Westminster.
Since its formation in March 2002, SWAAG has campaigned for greater powers to remove graffiti and pushed for a ban on the sale of spray paints to young people. Legislation has given councils such powers and the Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003 bans the sale of spray paints to under 16's.

Junior Citizen
The Junior Citizen Scheme is in its 19th year and helps to educate 8 to 11 year-olds on various topics ranging from graffiti vandalism to fire safety and stranger danger.
The scheme runs twice a year, during spring and summer for two weeks per session and consists of scenarios, role play and various interactive activities. These are presented by qualified and experienced individuals from the council and agencies such as the local police and fire service.

Southfields Community College students with headteacher Jacqueline Valin
and Councillor Martin D Johnson The scheme is popular with both children and teachers and relies on the professionalism and commitment of the council, local agencies and sponsors to make each event a success.

Thank you to everyone involved and we look forward to very fulfilling events in 2008.

The dates for this year are:

Spring: 25 March to 4 April 2008
Summer: 19 May to 23 May and 2 June to 6 June

Educating and entertaining within the community

'Consequence' and the Dangerous Theatre Company
In 2006, Wandsworth Council, Southfields Community College and The Dangerous Theatre Company worked together to produce a hard-hitting film entitled 'Consequence' aimed at 11 to 16 year-olds.

It tells the story of Nathaniel and how the consequences of his anti-social behaviour lead to the community turning their back on him in a time of need. The film featured young actors studying for a BTEC national diploma in performing arts at Southfields Community College. It received fantastic reviews at its launch in October 2006 at Graffiti Awareness Week.

Southfields Community College has done a great job addressing the issues and hopefully other schools will follow."

The DVD 'Consequence' programme is being rolled out to secondary schools in the borough throughout 2007/08.

Dangerous Theatre Company (for 9 to 11 year-olds)
The picture shown is from the launch event on 19 April 2004Since 2004, the Dangerous Theatre Company have toured primary schools with an anti-graffiti show, 'Joey versus the Vandalgraff'. It is an interactive, musical show aimed at nine to eleven-year-olds attending primary schools in Wandsworth.

It aims to demonstrate that graffiti is not cool, and show the cost to the environment and the expense of removing it.

The Joey V Vandalgraff theatre programme is being rolled out to primary schools in the borough throughout 2007/08

Other community events
We hold, participate in and support many other events in the local community, such as local fairs, school fetes, picnics, fun-days and national events such as 'ITV's Big Clean Up'.

The council also holds regular residents' meetings and feedback sessions which aim to promote Wandsworth Graffiti Removal Service.
