The Wandsworth Junior Citizen Scheme Now a RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) accredited scheme, the approach of the Wandsworth Junior Citizen Scheme is to provide the children with realistic life experiences through scenarios that cover a wide range of issues, encouraging them to think through problems they are confronted with and resolve them successfully. The scheme is aimed at year 5 (9-10 year old) children and runs twice a year in the spring and summer terms. It is very popular with schools and pupils. Running since 1987, the programme is staffed by Wandsworth Council, Police, Health Authority and Fire Service and has regular input from hard working, committed volunteers and work experience placements. Pupils receive a pack that includes an activity booklet which reinforces the messages they have been taught in each scenario. The children also take home a leaflet for their parent or carer about the programme. The teachers pack outlines a range of ideas and projects the teachers can use to extend their knowledge and reinforce the key messages in the classroom during the Year 6 preparation for starting secondary school. Junior Citizen Scheme Accreditation The scheme's importance was recently highlighted by the case of two boys from a primary school in Battersea, who were approached by a man in the street and told that he had their mothers' permission to take them to Thorpe Park. One of the boys wanted to go but his friend, who had attended the Junior Citizen Scheme, recognised the danger signs and convinced his friend not to go. They then told one of the teachers at their school and the matter was reported to the police. The scheme was awarded accreditation at the 20th year celebrations on Monday 30th June. Councillors along with colleagues from the Council, Police, Fire Brigade and various other agencies, not only from the borough but from all around the country as far as Aberdeen, attended to hear about the development of the scheme, celebrate the anniversary and witness the presentation of accreditation.
