Not In My Neighbourhood Week A new initiative was introduced in 2007 by the Home Office entitled 'Not In My Neighbourhood Week'. Police Services and other partners, including Wandsworth Council, took up the initiative across the country. More than 30 organisations and groups participated in the planning and delivery of events during the week.
Due to its success the scheme is now an annual event. Not In My Neighbourhood Week 2008, from Saturday 11 October to Sunday 19 October, included a Freshers BBQ at St. George's Medical School, fire safety awareness and community safety presentations, a re-launch of the LGBT Forum, a victim and witness conference, Diwali celebrations, a crime prevention theatre show for the elderly and much more besides. Not In My Neighbourhood Week 2007 A variety of events took place during the Week (15th to 21st October). The events extended throughout the week and ranged across the Borough, involving contact with in excess of 3100 people. The events included:
- A screening of a range of new educational DVDs made by young people for young people about issues including stop and search and dealing with pressure from gangs;
- The launch of seven new Neighbourhood Watches, including one in a day centre;
- The release of a new information-packed Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator's Guide, and a handy to use Neighbourhood Watch information leaflet;
- Bike marking and prevention and safety advice to cyclists; dog identification chipping and advice to owners;
- Distribution of an innovative new Travel Safer leaflet;
Distribution, of a highly popular, brand new purpose-designed lanyard to reduce thefts of bus passes from older people;
- A bike reparation scheme provided by the department of Children's Services. The scheme involves providing young offenders with training in the repair and maintenance of bicycles, which, when they have been renovated, are offered to victims of bicycle theft free of charge;
- Roll out of the highly effective Retail Radio scheme to Balham Town Centre, meaning all 5 town centres are now covered;
- Launch of an Alertbox scheme for 30 retailers in Southfields;
- And a well-attended Crime Prevention Roadshow at two key shopping centres.
